Johnson County, Kansas Inmate Search

A Johnson County inmate search is how members of the public locate whether someone is currently in county custody and review basic information about their detention. Johnson County is the most populous county in Kansas and its detention system reflects that scale. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office operates two adult detention facilities and maintains a publicly accessible online inmate search through the county’s Jail Information Management System.

Johnson County does not have a state-run prison inside its boundaries. Individuals who are convicted and sentenced to more than a year behind bars are typically transferred to Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC). The KDOC maintains its own offender search covering everyone serving a state sentence. There’s also no Federal Bureau of Prisons facility within Johnson County, but individuals facing federal charges in the area may be held at the Leavenworth Detention Center or other regional federal facilities while their cases proceed. Federal inmate locations can be checked through the BOP Inmate Locator.

The two most populated cities in Johnson County are Overland Park, the county’s largest municipality and Olathe, the county seat. Both cities have their own police departments. Overland Park is served by the Overland Park Police Departmentwhile Olathe is served by the Olathe Police Department. Neither city maintains a separate public jail roster. Individuals arrested by either department are processed through the county booking system and appear on the county inmate search once they have been booked into one of the two sheriff’s office detention facilities.

How to Find an Inmate in Johnson County Jail

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office runs two detention facilities. The main facility and larger of the two is the New Century Adult Detention Center. It is situated at the same location as the County Sheriff’s Office. The second facility is the Central Booking Facility which functions as the intake and processing point for most arrests made throughout the county. Once processed at Central Booking, individuals may remain there or be transferred to New Century depending on the capacity and housing classification.

The quickest way to check whether someone is currently in county custody is the online inmate search, which is kept current and is accessible at any time without registration.

How to Use the Johnson County Jail Roster

The Sheriff’s Office hosts its own Jail Information Management System (JIMS). It is a designated inmate search portal separate from the main county website. The roster reflects everyone currently in custody across both Johnson County facilities and is free to access.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to search it:

  • Go to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Officewebsite, click on Public Information in the navigation menu, then select inmate search. Or navigate directly to jims.jocosheriff.org/is.
  • Enter the person’s details. You can search by name, booking number, or criminal file number(CFN). You may also filter by charges.
  • Type the last name (add first name if needed) and click Search
  • Review the result list. It shows name, custody status, location, and booking details. Click a name to view full information.
  • The full profile includes booking dates, charges, arresting agency, and housing unit. You can also check recent bookings at jims.jocosheriff.org/br
  • If no result appears, the inmate may have been released, transferred or not yet processed. Call (913) 715-5100 to confirm.

What Information is Included in the Johnson County Inmate Roster

The Johnson County inmate search returns publicly viewable details for anyone currently held in county custody. When a record appears in the system, it typically includes:

  • Full legal name
  • Criminal File number (CFN), which serves as a unique identifier for the individual
  • Booking date and time
  • Charges or offenses at the time of booking
  • Assigned facility (e.g. New century or central booking)
  • Current Custody or release status
  • Arresting agency
  • Housing unit or classification level, where available

Access to these records is governed by the Kansas Open Records Act ( KORA), codified at K.S.A. 45-215 et seq. Under this law, records maintained by public agencies are generally open to the public unless a specific exemption applies. Booking details, custody status, and charge information are typically considered public record.

However, certain limitations exist. Records related to active investigations may be withheld if disclosure could interfere with the case. Information involving confidential informants or undercover personnel is also protected. Juvenile records are not publicly available, as individuals under 18 are processed through the juvenile justice system.

Additionally, sealed or expunged records are excluded from public access. Requests for certified or historical records must be submitted via the sheriff’s office official website.

Jail Facility Overview in Johnson County

Johnson County operates two adult facilities under the sheriff’s office detention bureau. The New Century adult detention center is the county’s main and largest jail. It has a combined capacity of over 1,000 beds across both facilities and houses adult male and female at different classification levels. This includes pre-trial detainees, individuals serving county sentences, and those waiting to be transferred to state custody. The facility runs 24/7 as a medium-security jail.

The Central Booking Facility serves as the intake center for all arrests in the county. Individuals arrested by any local agency are first brought here for processing, fingerprinting, and initial classification. After intake, they may be released or transferred to the New Century Facility depending on their status. Both locations operate under the same detention command.

Juvenile custody is handled separately through the Kansas Juvenile Justice System. Youth detainees are held at the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center in Olathe and are not listed in the adult inmate search system.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in the New Century Adult Detention Center?

Friends and family can deposit funds into an inmate’s account at any time during their stay. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Summit Food Service to handle commissary and banking services at both detention centers. Funds in an inmate’s account can be used towards commissary purchases, phone time, medical co-pays, and other facility services. There are two ways to deposit money, they include:

Lobby Kiosk

Deposit kiosks are available in the lobby of both detention facilities. Cash or credit/debit card deposits can be made in person between 7:00AM and 10:00PM daily. You will need the inmate’s six- digit Criminal File Number, which a lobby staff member can help locate if needed. Staff do not accept cash, checks or money orders directly. The kiosk is the only in-person deposit method.

Online Deposit

Online deposits are done through JailATM. Steps to get started include:

  • Visit jailatm.com and create an account or log in
  • Search for Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and locate the inmate by name or CFN
  • Select a deposit amount and pay by debit or credit card. Deposit fees may apply.
  • For customer service, call JailATM at (866) 335-2734. The service is available 24/7.

Telephone services for inmates are managed through Smart Inmate via their website or call 1-888-253-5178. Phone and Video accounts for family members are set up through the same platform.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

Since Johnson County operates two detention facilities under a single roster system, there’s no need to search two separate databases. Whether someone is housed at New Century or Central Booking, they will appear in the same JIMS inmate search via their jims.jocosheriff.org/is. The search results will indicate which facility the person is currently assigned to.

The Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center is not part of the public adult roster. Juvenile records are sealed by default under Kansas law and must be requested through appropriate legal channels. Individuals transferred to the state prison appear in the KDOC offender search.
